The Changeling does not seem to generate that much buzz since its premiere in Cannes Film festival. It is surprising with a director as talented as Clint Eastwood and a star like Angelina Jolie in the cast! The reviews popping up on are not very positive but I won't let those critics hinder me from appreciating this movie!

Angelina Jolie has really integrated her role: her acting is so real, can feel she is committed to her role! Probably because she's pregnant... Or am I just projecting this information on her performance? Anyway, this preview of the Changeling looks interesting.

Changeling is based upon a true story, upon the real-life Wineville Chicken Murders: movies are sometimes a kind of catharsis for our society... But sadly, in a vicious reversal, they are also sometimes models for some lost idle souls waiting to commit crimes...

Changeling Based on a true story

Like we said before, the upcoming movie Changeling is based on a true story: it is based upon the Wineville Chicken Murders.

At the request of Clint Eastwood the reference to this true story has been omitted from from the official synopsis. Clint Eastwood states indeed that 'the important thing […] is whether it’s a good story, and if it’s well told'.

Nonetheless the real names of all the characters have been retained!

From Wikipedia we learn more about the case:

The Wineville Chicken Murders (also known as he Wineville Chicken Coop Murders) took place in the late 1920's in Los Angeles: the crazy Gordon Stewart Northcott kidnapped and murdered boys before being caught and sentenced to be hanged.

Arthur Hutchins, a runaway from Illinois, claimed he was Walter Collins, one of the missing boys, so he could get a free trip to California. LA police, in a hurry to close the case, tried to convince Walter's mother, Christine Collins, that Arthur Hutchins, was her son. When she refused to believe this was her son, she was placed in the psychopathic ward of the Los Angeles County General Hospital for ten days. Only after Arthur Hutchins, admitted he was not Christine Collins' son was Christine released.

About the title of the movie, Changeling:
In some old legend from Europe, a changeling is the offspring of a troll or a faery that has been secretly left in the place of a human child. Either by malice or to use the kidnapped child as servant...
Hence the title of the movie directed by Clint Eastwood.

Nowadays DNA tests would help to avoid such a situation. But other cases where innocents are convicted or secluded still happen unfortunately...

Changeling in November 2008

Clint Eastwood is not only a great actor but he is also a great movie director nowadays. He is working on a new movie entitled Changeling which should be released in November 2008.

Set in the late 1920s the movie is based loosely based upon the real-life Wineville Chicken Murders.

Changeling is starring the beautiful Angelina Jolie in the lead role and John Malkovich in support.

The plot of the Changeling:
"In the late 1920's, when the son of Christine Collins (Jolie) is returned to her after being kidnapped, she soon comes to suspect that the child is not her own. After being vilified as an unfit mother, Christine confronts the city authorities, and corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department, in order to find out the truth." (Source: Wikipedia)

Hollywood does not have to go very far to get some inspiration: real life is a bonanza that cannot be depleted...
